DID YOU KNOW?
Tacoma’s story spans more than two centuries from the time Captain George Vancouver anchored off Tacoma’s north shore in 1792.

In 1870, Tacoma’s natural deep-water port became an attraction that the Northern Pacific Railroad couldn’t pass up, when it made Tacoma a stop on its transcontinental line.

Old Tacoma and New Tacoma merged in 1884 and incorporated as Tacoma. By 1890, the population reached 36,000 people.

Tacoma is home to the Port of Tacoma, the seventh-largest container port in the United States, and it is within 20 miles of the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and 36 miles of the city of Seattle.

Rob Camner,

Rob Camner,

Headmaster, teaches Freshman Seminar
Rob Camner is Charles Wright’s Headmaster; he also periodically teaches.  Camner has taught linear algebra (a post-calculus course) three times at CWA and since 2006 has taught a freshman seminar on American government.

Camner has led a number of Winterim groups, including several Northeast college tours and a trip to Costa Rica.

“What I really love about CWA are the students,” says Camner.  “They aren’t all cut from the same cloth.  Because they come from families with different definitions of success, they don’t compete against one another to the extent students do at some other independent schools.  CWA has a remarkably supportive student atmosphere.”

Camner attended two different independent schools from grades four through 12.  He graduated from Oberlin College with a double major in mathematics and government, and earned his masters degree in math from Ohio State.  Prior to joining the CWA community in 1996, Camner taught at the Maret School and the Sidwell Friends School, both in Washington, DC, and served as Headmaster of Canton Country Day School in Canton, OH.

“People sometimes wonder exactly what a Headmaster does.  I spend a good part of my time taking care of the here and now, but I also spend a lot of time working on the future, both short term and long term.  I want to make sure that the CWA of tomorrow is even better than the wonderful school we have today.”

“Serving as Headmaster is quite rewarding.  Teaching, however, is not only rewarding, but is also pure fun!”

At home, Camner enjoys growing fruit trees, rewiring houses, and experimenting with digital photography.  He is also the past treasurer and a current board member of the Tacoma Urban League.
