Tacoma’s story spans more than two centuries from the time Captain George Vancouver anchored off Tacoma’s north shore in 1792.
In 1870, Tacoma’s natural deep-water port became an attraction that the Northern Pacific Railroad couldn’t pass up, when it made Tacoma a stop on its transcontinental line.
Old Tacoma and New Tacoma merged in 1884 and incorporated as Tacoma. By 1890, the population reached 36,000 people.
Tacoma is home to the Port of Tacoma, the seventh-largest container port in the United States, and it is within 20 miles of the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and 36 miles of the city of Seattle.

Tracey Golding,
Upper School Spanish, Winterim Co-Coordinator
Tracey Golding teaches Spanish in the Upper School. In class, she likes to get her students speaking as much as possible by doing lots of communicative, oral activities. She also really enjoys sharing her love of poetry with them and helping them write original poems in Spanish.
“I hope that I will be remembered for my energy and enthusiasm, and for sharing my love of the Spanish language and culture with my students,” says Golding. “Around the holidays, several alums who are now studying at various universities stopped by my office to visit. They told me how much they appreciated my class and how much they felt they had learned. They each plan to continue with their Spanish studies at college and hope to pursue careers in which they can use their language skills.”
Golding graduated from Amherst College in Massachusetts. She has worked as a professional actress in Massachusetts, Vermont and New York, and she once toured the United States as a cast member in a touring production of The Phantom of the Opera. Golding joined the faculty at Charles Wright in 2006. She also serves as co-coordinator for Winterim.
“I believe that people should celebrate the diverse peoples and cultures of the world,” says Golding. She has lived in Spain, India, Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong. She has traveled in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Egypt, England, France, Greece, Italy, Jordan, Monaco, Myanmar, Nepal, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Portugal, Singapore, Syria, and Thailand. Closer to home, she enjoys spending time with her family, jogging and gardening.
